Everyone dies someday; but I get to dye everyday!
I’m lucky enough to live in the beautiful mountains of of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, where it’s easy to find vibrant color combinations, intriguing shapes, and flowing patterns to capture on silk and other fibers. I like to use items I find in nature to print directly on the fabric, or use them as inspiration for hand-painted designs. After each item is painted with dye, it’s then steamed on my wood-fired cook stove or with boiling water to set the colors. I love seeing all the freshly dyed scarves hanging on the clothesline to dry. It’s a little like canning food from my homestead garden– each piece preserves the essence of a season or a moment. When I see them all lined up, I remember all the good living I had — while I was dying.
